Stephen Raymond Kelly, 39, of 71 Doreen St. died at home on Sunday of heart failure. He came to Pittsfield in 2002 from Overland Park, Kan. Born in Kansas City, Miss., on May 5, 1967, son of Robert A. Kelly and Sally A. Rahner Kelly Thompson, he was educated in Kansas and Missouri schools and was a 1985 graduate of Bishop Miege High School in Shawnee Mission, Kan. He was a 1991 graduate of Emporia State University in Emporia, Kan., where he received his bachelor's degree in sociology. Continuing his education, he earned his master's degree in social work from the University of California at Berkeley in 1995. At the time of his death, he had completed the coursework for a doctorate in social work from Smith College in Northampton, and was nearing the completion of his doctoral dissertation. Mr. Kelly had been employed by The Austen Riggs Center in Stockbridge as a licensed independent clinical social worker, where he specialized in family counseling. For the past four years, he had also served as an adjunct professor in the social work department of Smith College in Northampton. He enjoyed music and attending Tanglewood. He was also a Kansas City Chiefs fan. Besides his father, of Bonita Springs, Fla., and his mother, of Parkville, Miss., he leaves a brother, Chris Kelly of Lenexa, Kan.; his maternal grandmother, Kathleen Rahner of Lenexa; his paternal grandmother, Marjorie Carroll of Port Orchard, Wash.; his stepmother, Susan Kelly of Bonita Springs; and his stepfather, Michael Thompson of Parkville. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service for Stephen Raymond Kelly, who died Sunday, Aug. 20, 2006, will be held Saturday, Aug. 26, at 11 a.m. at DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, MA 01201. Burial will be at a later date in the Resurrection Catholic Cemetery in Shawnee Mission, Kan. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Kelly may be made to the Greyhound Rescue Organization, KC REGAP, 7900 East 102 St., Kansas City, Miss. Mr. Kelly also leaves aunts and uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Kelly had a great love for being part of the Austin Riggs family and a great love of teaching at Smith College. He had a great love of his family and his nieces, nephews and grandmothers.

I met Steve at UC Berkeley in California while he was doing his MSW and I was doing my MPH. I only heard in the last year (2025) that he was unexpectedly gone 20 yrs ago now. He was a good friend with a good heart and a wonderful smile while we were at school together for just a short time. But the impression has been lasting. I was so eager to hear an update when I crossed paths with another friend and classmate. I was saddened to hear this news. My condolences to his family and loved ones and I´m sorry that he has been gone so long. Thank you for having this page here and the photo posted below from August 25, 2006 so that I could see that smile and that kind face again.
