Rivers in Berkshire County have proved powerful - both in creating industry and destructive floods. At left is a photograph of the Hoosic River at Union Street during the 1948 flood. The image was provided courtesy George Betourney; see more of his flood photos here. Congress approved $20 million in funding in 1950 to build the flood control system in North Adams and Adams. They were completed in 1959. A past article noted in 2004 that "Ironically, since 1949, there have been no major flood-flow events to protect against."

That is until 2011.
