Reminder to Lanesborough, Williamstown Voters: Mount Greylock School Committee a 'Write-In' Election

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Politicians and pundits in recent years have been preaching patience when it comes to getting election night results.

That usually means places like California, where vote-counting can be complicated or Michigan, where razor thin margins are anticipated.

Add Williamstown and Lanesborough to that list.

It is not a matter of pre-election polling suggesting particularly tight races; there is no such polling. Rather, it is a question of how voters will be making their selections in the race for the Mount Greylock Regional School District Committee.

None of the six candidates who qualified for four seats up for grabs on the panel appear on the ballots that have been mailed out, used in early voting or will be distributed at the polls on Nov. 3.

That means that all votes will be cast as write-ins, and that means it will take significantly longer for election workers to tally up votes in the local election once the polls close at 8 p.m. at Lanesborough Town Hall and Williamstown Elementary School.

As always, voters in both towns vote for all four seats on the ballot: two seats for Lanesborough residents and two for Williamstown residents in this year’s balloting.

To help voters decide, iBerkshires.com asked all six declared candidates a series of questions about issues the committee might face during the four-year terms they seek. Likewise, the Williamstown chapter of the League of Women Voters hosted a candidate forum, viewable on Willinet.

As a reminder, voters will be asked to enter both the names of the people they are voting for and the candidates' addresses, which are:

Lanesborough:
Curtis Elfenbein, 34 Summer St., Lanesborough, MA 01237
Jodi Szczepaniak-Locke, 21 Stormview Road, Lanesborough, MA 01237
Melissa Zuroff, 930 N. Main St., Lanesborough, MA 01237

Williamstown:
Laurel Bifano, 71 Cole Ave., Williamstown MA 01267
Carolyn Greene, 229 Bridges Road, Williamstown MA 01267
Steven Miller, 16 John St., Williamstown, MA 01267

Williamstown Town Clerk Nicole Beverly confirmed this month that voters are welcome to bring "cheat sheets" or their cell phone into the polling booth to help them remember the spelling of a candidate’s name and his or her address.

Williamstown Select Board Wears Many Hats at Monday Meeting

By Stephen DravisiBerkshires Staff
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Select Board on Monday evening has two different meetings scheduled for two different locations, but, in reality, the first of those sessions was actually four meetings in one.

At its regular twice-monthly meeting on the first floor of Town Hall, the board took action in its capacity as the town's alcohol license commission, road commission, parks commission and, yes, Select Board.

After wearing all those hats, the board moved to the Municipal Building's third floor to conduct additional Select Board business, the evaluation of the town manager.

The item up for consideration came under the auspices of the board as an alcohol commission, a request from the new owner of the 6 House Pub for a change of manager on the establishment's liquor license.

Attorney Dennis Egan of Cohen Kinne Valicenti & Cook represented the new ownership, 1896 House LLC, which is under contract to purchase the 1896 House Inn and associated restaurant on Cold Spring Road (Route 7).

Egan said the new manager works for Roam Hospitality of St. Petersburg, Fla., which currently operates Massachusetts hotels in Salem and Rockport in addition to other spots around the country.

"The plan is to undertake a renovation … and make it a premier flagship hospitality and restaurant destination," Egan said.
