Staff Reports Print Story | Email Story

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Emergency crews responded to a multi-agency call in downtown North Adams late Tuesday night after a pickup truck veered off the road and crashed into the Marshall Street storefront housing Brewster's and Tres Niños.

According to North Adams 911, at approximately 10:00 p.m., units from the North Adams Fire Department, North Adams Police Department, and Northern Berkshire EMS were dispatched to Marshall Street following reports of a vehicle colliding with a building.

Initial reports indicate the vehicle was traveling southbound on Marshall Street when the driver lost control. The truck left the roadway and slammed into the storefronts of both Brewster's and Tres Niños Taqueria.

Brewster's took the brunt of the damage. The truck drove completely through the front window and side entryway before coming to a stop at the Tres Niños entryway. A streetlight was also toppled in the crash.

First responders evaluated two occupants who were inside the vehicle at the time of the impact. One person sustained injuries and was transported to the emergency department for treatment. The second occupant reported no injuries.

Letter: Support Whalen for Congress

Letter to the Editor

To the Editor:

I believe representation requires more than money and longevity. It requires presence. That is why I am supporting Jeromie Whalen for Congress in the Democratic primary on Sept. 1.

Congressman Richard Neal has represented Western Massachusetts for nearly four decades and has brought federal funding back to the district. I know those investments matter, but funding alone is not representation.

Our district stretches across 83 municipalities. Communities in the Berkshires should not have to wonder whether their member of Congress remembers they are here.

Jeromie has built his campaign differently. He has come into our communities, held town halls, attended local events, knocked on doors, and listened to the people who live here. He has pledged to reject corporate PAC contributions, supports West-East Rail and stronger rural broadband, and has made protecting LGBTQ-plus people an explicit part of his platform.

The campaign finances make the contrast difficult to ignore. Through Aug. 12, Neal's campaign reported more than $1.55 million from other political committees, compared with about $593,000 from individual contributors. Whalen reported more than $323,000 from individuals and no contributions from other political committees.

The Aug. 26 debate reinforced that contrast. After declining a broader community forum, Neal agreed to one 30-minute debate at WWLP's Chicopee studio. WWLP is owned by Nexstar Media Group, whose PAC has financially supported Neal, including a $5,000 contribution this cycle, and shortly before WWLP hosted one of his debates in 2020. Thirty minutes is not much time to answer to 83 communities after nearly 40 years in office.

Congressman Neal shows up for his corporate-welfare PAC checks, earmark photo ops, and carefully staged press events. Jeromie Whalen shows up for town halls, local events, and conversations with human beings.
