Sen. Paul Mark Delivers Commemorative Declarations of Independence to Communities
LENOX, Mass. — Senator Paul Mark today launched "Declarations Across the District," a district-wide initiative commemorating the approaching 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence by presenting local officials with commemorative copies of the historic document in every city and town he represents.
Beginning in Lenox, Senator Mark, Co-Chair of the Massachusetts Commission on the 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution, embarked on a district-wide tour across Berkshire, Franklin, Hampden, and Hampshire counties, traveling hundreds of miles to personally deliver the Declaration to all 57 municipalities in the Berkshire, Hampden, Franklin, and Hampshire Senate District. Before departing from Lenox, municipal officials representing Pittsfield, Lenox, Lee, Dalton, Becket, Otis, Cheshire, New Marlborough, Williamstown, Sandisfield, and Lanesborough gathered to accept commemorative copies of the Declaration of Independence on behalf of their communities.
"As we prepare to celebrate our nation's 250th anniversary, it's fitting that we begin in the places where democracy is lived every day—our cities and towns," said Senator Paul Mark. "The Declaration of Independence belongs to every American, and I wanted to personally bring this symbol of our shared history to each community I have the privilege of representing. I hope these presentations encourage people to reflect on our founding ideals and the importance of civic participation in keeping our democracy strong."
At each stop, Senator Mark is joined by local officials for a brief presentation recognizing the enduring importance of local government and civic engagement. The commemorative copies are intended to serve as lasting reminders of the principles that continue to guide communities across the Commonwealth.
The tour is expected to continue over multiple days, with the goal of delivering a commemorative copy of the Declaration of Independence to every municipality in the district ahead of July 8, the 250th anniversary of the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia on July 8, 1776—a milestone being commemorated through nationwide public readings.
The tour reflects Senator Mark's commitment to promoting civic education and public participation as Massachusetts prepares to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution. As Co-Chair of the Massachusetts 250 Commission, Senator Mark has helped lead statewide efforts to recognize the Commonwealth's central role in the nation's founding and encourage residents to engage with the history and ideals that continue to shape American democracy.
