Mount Greylock Unified Wins in OT at Wahconah
DALTON, Mass. – Devin Beverly scored with an assist from J.T. Szymanski in the final minute of overtime to give the Mount Greylock Unified basketball team a 34-32 win over Wahconah.
A tight game throughout came down to the final moments of regulation.
Neither team led by more than four points, and for most of the contest, they were separated by just a bucket.
Wahconah’s Jaxxon Hand (eight points) scored four straight to give his team its last lead at 32-28.
Moments later, Szymanski grabbed a defensive rebound and drove for a transition basket to get the Mounties within two.
But Mount Greylock was able to tie it up on a shot from the wing by Matthew Klinger. And after a brief discussion between the coaches, the teams decided to go five more minutes to decide it.
Defense ruled most of the OT, but Beverly, who finished with 14 points, made the final bucket of the afternoon with 10 seconds left to put the Mounties ahead for good.
Wahconah pushed the ball up court but was unable to get a good look at the basket as time expired.
Daniel Lawson scored six points for the Mounties, who got four points apiece from Monte Melkonyan and Charlett Garnish.
Trayce Lyman led Wahconah with 10 points. Jason Daly scored six, and James Mercier added four.
Wahconah is at Drury High School to play Hoosac Valley on Oct. 7.
Mount Greylock is at Monument Mountain on Tuesday.
