Auger, Villnave Lead Mount Greylock Past Wahconah
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Brady Auger scored five goals, Brayden Villnave had six points, and the Mount Greylock boys lacrosse team Friday pulled away in the second half to earn a 15-11 win over Wahconah.
The Mounties rode the momentum of three straight goals from Villnave (four goals, two assists) at the end of the first half, outscoring Wahconah, 3-1 in the second to build a three-goal margin.
After Dow Young (three goals) scored late in the third to give Mount Greylock an 11-8 lead, Wahconah never got closer than two goals the rest of the way.
The victory gave the Mounties an eight-game winning streak – a stretch that started with an overtime win in Dalton nearly a month ago.
“It was great,” Auger said of the win. “Honestly, after the OT win last time, we knew we had to come back, come better, and we did just that. Everybody executed on the field.”
Luke Irwin scored a pair of goals and Henry Easton had a goal and two assists for the Mounties, who got nine saves from Oden Wojtkowski – five in the first period, when Wahconah outshot its hosts, 7-3.
“All credit to [Wojtkowski],” Auger said. “He’s a brick wall in that net. He really keeps us in every game that we play.”
After Young opened the game with a man-up goal and Auger scored less than a minute later with 10 minutes, 3 seconds left in the first quarter, it looked like the Mounties might run away with it.
But Wahconah’s Kesler Anello scored the first two of his eight goals to tie the game midway through the period.
Mount Greylock’s Irwin picked up a loose ball in front of the circle and fired home a shot two minutes later to give his team a 3-2 lead that held until the end of the quarter.
The second quarter saw the teams combine for 10 goals.
Wahconah took its biggest lead of the night when Giovanni Venable (two goals, three assists) fired home a bounce shot from the left wing to make it 7-5 with 5:05 left in the half.
But then Villnave took over, scoring three straight times – once on the man up – to send Mount Greylock into the break with an 8-7 lead.
Young capped the third quarter with his second goal to make it 11-8 going to the final 12 minutes. And Wahconah was unable to make up the gap.
“We saw in the first game, neither one of us could separate,” Wahconah coach Matt Fisher said. “This game, it took a while for it to separate, but they did.
“I think that’s on me. I didn’t put them in a good position to beat the zone. They run a heck of a zone. Credit to that coach over there. He knows what he’s doing.”
After scoring seven goals in the first half, Wahconah managed just four goals after half-time.
The last came with about six minutes to play off the stick of Anello, who finished the game with nine points.
Young answered that goal with an assist from Auger, and Villnave closed the scoring with just more than two minutes left.
Wahconah (5-6), which got seven saves from Noah Levante, is home on Monday to face Smith Vocational.
Mount Greylock (9-1) makes the short trip to North Adams on Monday to face McCann Tech.
