Max Curtis Rothschild, 7

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. —  Max Curtis Rothschild, beloved son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin, and friend, died tragically on Friday, Aug. 7, after being hit by a car while riding his bike. He was seven years old.

Max had just learned how to ride a bike and was so proud of himself. He was practicing to get ready for a longer bike ride on an upcoming family vacation.

Everyone who met Max was struck by how smart he was. He loved math and loved learning. He had an incredible sense of direction and always knew where he was and where he was going. Max loved going to chess club and especially chess camp this summer. He also loved soccer camp and was so proud when he was named player of the day on his last day of camp.

Max loved swimming and being in the water. On a family trip in Maine a couple weeks ago, he went in lake after lake and still wanted to go back in the pool after dinner for night swimming. He loved skiing, too. He loved our family trips to Vermont, eating pizza and playing arcade games the night before skiing, and then spending the next day skiing moguls and through the trees. He was just getting into golf and proudly told us the night before he died that he had won two of the competitions at his golf clinic. Max loved adventure of any kind, like ropes courses, ziplines, or hiking over rocks.

Max was a good friend, if sometimes a little bossy. He had a strong personality and knew what he wanted. He had so much confidence. In pre-school we referred to him as the mayor of the school because he walked around like he owned the place (and that’s how he was treated). He was also an amazing brother, even if fights did happen. He loved his siblings, Caleb and Ellie, and they will miss him every day.

Max leaves behind a whole world of people who love him so much. His nana and poppy (David and Deborah Rothschild) and his grandpa (Steve Kaufman). His Uncle Aaron Rothschild. His Aunt Sarah Kaufman and Uncle Paul Zinn. His cousins Sophie and Henry Zinn. His brother Caleb and his sister Eleanor (Ellie). His parents, Laura Kaufman and Adam Rothschild. And so many more.

Max brought so much joy and love into all our lives. We will miss his incredible mind, his determination, his mischievousness, his adventurous spirit, his bossiness, his smile, and all the little things that made him exactly who he was. We will all miss him forever. Seven years with Max was not enough time.

Funeral services will be held at Congregation Beth Israel at 53 Lois St., North Adams on Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2026, at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Beth Israel Cemetery at 512 Walker St., Clarksburg. Shiva will be observed at the family home on Tuesday after the burial and on Wednesday and Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 4 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Max's memory to the Williamstown Youth Center, where Max went after school. We are so deeply sorry for the heartache your family has to endure. Max will always be loved, missed and deeply cherished by his former classmates at pine cobble school. They had such a special first friend group. Forever the mayor.

Sincerest condolences to you on the death of Max,SHABBAT SHALOM
from: Thomas Patrick McGrory Jr on: 08-14-2026

I propose Max's Legacy, a multi-municipality collaboration between town planners, police departments, state police and paramedics, to address driving issues; from impairment, to speeding, to visual obstructions.

Too many precious souls have been taken in this county by from vehicular operation; from pedestrians to bicyclists/motorcyclists, to elderly/disabled utilizing the shoulder.

I don't know the Rothschild family, but this description of a bright and beautiful young boy has shattered a piece of my soul. May WE ALL make Max's memories be a blessing, and be more thoughtful, slower and kinder on the streets and sidewalks of this beautiful country county.

Max's immediate family: I will light shabbat candles in his honor tonight. Eight bright flames, under the waxing moon, for this dear child, departed too soon.

Dearest Rothschild Family, I briefly got to spend time with Max as his Spanish teacher at Pine Cobble and always found him to be absolutely delightful. My shock and heartache are eclipsed by what you all must be going through. We/I adored Max and were lucky to spend any time with him at all. May you find some kind of comfort with loved ones you hold close. Know that we share your grief and support you in what ever way we can. Humbly and Sincerely, Enrique Segura

The memorial service for Max was amazing. The outpouring of community members and heartwarming emotions was itself a tribute to Max and his incredible family. What came through loud and clear that this boy was smart, adventurous, loving, and funny. We did not know Max, personally, but we sure wish we had.

Dear Max, When I first met you, I said to myself, “This guy knows what he wants and isn’t afraid to say so.” I had tremendous opportunity to be your camp counselor at Pine Cobble for a summer and after school teacher that following year. You made me laugh, allowed me hug to you when things got tough with the other campers/ students, where you would wipe your eyes and ran to be with Aspen and Theo, the incredible threesome. You had confidence and lots of determination, even if it drove me crazy. Nature was your friend, climbing in Monkey Vines and hanging off the slide, even though I told you to use it the correct way. You enriched my life in so many ways and I thank you for that. Thank you for allowing me to guide and teach you in your short journey. Life can be incredibly unfair but incredibly beautiful and at this moment, I choose to see the beauty. The side where we all got to experience your tenacity, bossiness, determination and most of all your love for those around you and your love for life. Never stop climbing, riding your bike and swinging from branches where you are, for that is how I will always remember you.
Love,
Mrs. C
Thank you for you
