Ellen Schiff, 94

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. —  A longtime professor of French and Comparative Literature at North Adams State College, now the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, Ellen (Frankfurt) Schiff died Friday evening in New York City. She was 94. A native of Beach Haven, NJ, she was born behind the prescription room of her father’s Long Beach Island pharmacy. As a teenager, she worked the soda fountain, seven days a week. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa and magna cum laude from Syracuse University, spending her junior year in Paris, where she studied at the Sorbonne. She arrived in France aboard the S.S. Ile de France but arrived in Syracuse in a boyfriend’s car, without her parents’ knowledge. She went on to earn a master’s degree from Syracuse and a Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

She published prolifically on Jewish theatre, writing and editing six volumes that included From Stereotype to Metaphor: The Jew in Contemporary Drama (1982) to Plays of Jewish Interest (2006). She contributed as well to a great number of anthologies and scholarly journals.

After more than four decades in the Berkshires, she moved to New York City, where she immersed herself in the city’s cultural life, relishing especially her evenings at the ballet and opera. She was especially gifted at following a recipe with surgical precision; sculpting a perfect sentence; applauding elegance. She could locate humor at the unlikeliest address and was a master of verbal hijinks. She never saw a spade she failed to identify as a spade. She remained devoted to Long Beach Island, where she spent her summers.

She is survived by her children, Gary, and his wife Arlene; Stacy, and her husband, Marc de La Bruyere; five loving grandchildren, Sarah, Max, Hannah, Millie, and Josephine; three great-grandchildren and nephew Steve Frankfurt and sister-in-law Paula Frankfurt. She was predeceased by her husband, Morton Schiff, third-generation proprietor of Schiff Clothing in Adams, MA and by Daniel Berley, her second husband, whom she married in 1998, and her brother Joel Fankfurt.

FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday October 5, 2026 at Beth Israel Cemetery, 512 Walker Street, Clarksburg, MA. Donations in Ellen Schiff’s memory can be made to the Jewish Federation of the Berkshires, Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, or the Memorial Foundation for Jewish Culture. Dr. Schiff was a stellar professor and human being. I am saddened to hear of her passing.

I was 10 years old when my father, a student in Dr. Schiff's literature class at NASC, took me along on a class overnight field trip to NYC. It was my first time there and probably my father's, too. We toured the Empire State Building, Ellis Island, walked through and had dinner in Chinatown, and stayed in a high-rise hotel. On the ride home, we stopped at the Cloisters museum. All the while Dr. Schiff's lively narration set the scene. One of the most important things a teacher can do is broaden horizons. I only met her that one time but I remember her. My condolences.

Gary and Stacy - Please accept my sincere condolences for your Mom’s passing. She certainly leaves behind an amazing legacy. May your fondest memories of her comfort you during this time.

Madame Schiff has been memorialized in my own writing as the wisest person I have known. With her encouragement and support I was in Paris in 1967 when certain luminaries joined in anti-war protests in the Bois de Boulogne. A year later I was in the US Army on my way to Vietnam. I met her when I returned from the war and the first thing she said to me was "Tes cheveux sont courts". Merci Madame, je vous aime,

I am very sorry to learn of Dr. Schiff's passing. She was such a friendly and gracious lady. Her warm personality shone brightly in everything she did. I join with all the others who will sincerely miss her. My condolences to her friends and family.

I had her years ago at NASC. I took French with her and a lit course she taught with Dr Goldstein. She was a wonderful professor and I think of those classes often.

May her memory be a blessing.
