Benny Goodman’s musical legacy reaches beyond jazz. Bartók’s Contrasts, written for Goodman and violinist Joseph Szigeti, shares the program with Mozart’s beloved Clarinet Quintet as Close Encounters With Music opens its 35th season.

Clarinetist Alexander Fiterstein brings these two works into focus: Mozart’s singing lines and the beauty of the clarinet among the strings, and Bartók’s restless exchanges between clarinet, violin and piano. Beethoven’s spirited Trio in B-flat major, Op. 11, and music by Gershwin complete the afternoon.

Fiterstein performs with pianist Michael Chertock, violinists Xiao-Dong Wang and Helena Baillie, violist Daniel Panner, and cellist and artistic director Yehuda Hanani. Hanani’s lively commentary explores the people and cultural circumstances behind the music, offering more to listen for in each work.

Stay for the Afterglow reception, open to all audience members, to meet the musicians and continue the conversation.

Tickets: $35 balcony / $60 orchestra, plus processing fees.
Reserve your seats at cewm.org.

This event is an annual census of Central Berkshire lakes and wetlands that Tom Tyning has continued from Bartlett Hendricks himself. The trip involves driving in cars to many lakes, getting out, and counting every bird. Bring a scope and lunch, the trip ends at about 3:00 PM. There is very little walking on this trip. There will be a stop for apples and pastries at Bartlett’s Orchard in Richmond!    Meet at the Berkshire Museum on South Street. Be aware, today Daylight Savings Time Ends!
